Gunmen Storm Kenyan University; Take Many Hostages

The gunmen continue to engage Kenyan forces.

Gunmen on Thursday morning stormed a university college in Garissa town in northern Kenya shooting indiscriminately and taking several students and teachers hostages.



"You can hear from behind there is still shooting and explosions going on," Daud Yusuf, a resident of Garissa, told The Anadolu Agency by phone.



"It started minutes after fajr [morning] prayers," he said.



The gunmen continued to engage Kenya military offices who had arrived to rescue the students and teachers.



Sources with the Kenyan Red Cross said two guardsmen have been killed.



Police sources were not immediately available to confirm.



Some of the students who had managed to escape said at least five gunmen had stormed the college.



The university reportedly has a population of more than 500 students.



Garissa, which is less than 200km from the Kenya Somali border, has in the past been hit by attacks claimed by the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab. - Nayrobi
