A fire broke out in the apartment on the upper floor of a three-story building located on Çağlayan Street in the Güvercintepe neighborhood of Başakşehir, Istanbul. Of the six people in the apartment, five managed to escape on their own, while 12-year-old Nazlıcan Pehlivan was trapped inside.
12-YEAR-OLD CHILD LOST HIS LIFE
Upon notification, a large number of fire, medical, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters made intense efforts to rescue Pehlivan, who was inside, and to extinguish the fire, but they reached the child's lifeless body.
IT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED FROM AN ELECTRIC HEATER
The fire, which is believed to have originated from an electric heater, was extinguished as a result of the teams' efforts. The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of Küçükçekmece has launched an investigation into the incident.
AWAKENED HIS FAMILY, BUT GOT TRAPPED IN THE FLAMES
Nazlıcan Pehlivan's brother-in-law, Nurbay Yüksek, stated that the fire broke out around 5:00 AM, saying, "A girl about 12-13 years old woke up and called her brother. 'Brother, wake up, the house is on fire. Go wake up mom and dad, I will hide,' she said. At that moment, she hid behind the sofa. In the panic of the fire, when everyone woke up and went outside, they realized that one of their children was missing. This time, they wanted to go back inside. As the fire intensified, they tried to spray water with a hose, but they couldn't enter the flames." Yüksek noted that the firefighters found the child's lifeless body once they entered.
THEY LEFT THE HEATER ON WITHOUT SLEEPING
Yüksek reported that the family left the electric heater on before going to sleep, and the children's school clothes were spread in front of the heater to dry. He mentioned that it is believed the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit during the night or by something igniting after the heater fell over.
