Albanian Central Bank Governor Ardian Fullani has been placed under house arrest in connection with a large sum of money that has been stolen from the bank's vaults.
After being arrested on September 5 on charges of abuse of office, Fullani will await trial under house arrest, ruled the Tirana Appeals Court on Monday.
This decision comes five weeks after a bank employee admitted to stealing more than 700 million lek (about $7 million) from the Albanian Central Bank's vaults.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Central Bank management decided to remove Fullani from his post as chairman, which he occupied for 10 years. The decision is expected to be approved by the Albanian Parliament on Thursday.
