THE UNITED NATIONS (UN) reported that 87% of the cultivated areas in the Gaza Strip have been damaged due to Israeli attacks, and that 79 to 89% of the agricultural infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, with only 13% of the cultivated areas remaining intact.

UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Assistant Farhan Haq spoke at a daily press briefing. Haq stated that agricultural lands have been widely damaged due to Israeli attacks in Gaza and that the soil has been contaminated, saying, "Only 13% of the cultivated areas in the Gaza Strip have not been damaged, and most of them are inaccessible because they are located in areas where Israeli forces are stationed."

89% OF AGRICULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURE HAS BEEN DAMAGED

According to a recent geographical analysis from the UN Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), Haq emphasized that 79 to 89% of the agricultural infrastructure in Gaza has been damaged, and that orchards, especially olive trees, have also suffered damage to the same extent or have been destroyed in most cases.

Haq noted that the UN World Food Programme (WFP) is trying to strengthen its distribution network by opening main roads to continue food aid in Gaza, and reported that as part of these efforts, the WFP has tripled its storage capacity within Gaza.

"ENTRIES ARE STILL RESTRICTED TO ONLY TWO BORDER CROSSINGS"

Haq pointed out that despite significant progress made by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) regarding the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the urgent needs of the people are still very high and that barriers have not been lifted quickly enough since the ceasefire.

UN Spokesperson Haq reported that since the beginning of the week, the UN and its partners have passed more than 37,000 tons of aid through Gaza's border crossings, mostly food, but that entries are still limited to only two border crossings.

Haq drew attention to the fact that there is no direct access from Israel to northern Gaza or from Egypt to southern Gaza.

Regarding the need for shelter, Haq noted that hundreds of thousands of families in Gaza are still facing an urgent need for protection due to weather conditions as winter approaches.

If barriers to the entry of humanitarian aid are lifted, Haq stated that they have sufficient supplies to meet most of the needs of approximately 1.5 million Palestinians who require such assistance.
