Nearly a week of heavy rain has left a total of 127,389 hectares of farmland in flooding across Myanmar, sources with the Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation said on Thursday.
At least 20 people were killed and thousands of others were affected by the heavy rainfall.
In Sagaing and Mandalay regions as well as Kachin and Shan states, the floods destroyed more than 17,000 houses, affecting nearly 100,000 people.
Regional authorities are carrying out rescue and relief work in these flood-hit areas.
The country's weather bureau has issued an orange alert, forecasting the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal may lead to heavy rainfall, strong winds and flash floods in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Yangon, Ayeyawady and Bago Regions as well as Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayin and Mon States.
The weather bureau has also urged fishing boats at sea to be alert to the severe weather conditions. (Cihan/Xinhua)
