Five people have died in southern France overnight after heavy thunderstorms swept the region, according to media reports.
France Bleu Herault radio reported Thursday that four people died and two others are missing after flood waters swept through a campsite in the village of Lamalou-les-Bainn.
An elderly women is also reported to have perished after falling into a swollen river in Aveyron, in the country's south-central region.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a statement Wednesday that "The Languedoc-Roussillon region in southern France has been experiencing storms of high intensity, which unfortunately resulted in the death of a person in Aveyron this afternoon."
More than 400 firefighters are working with police and local authorities to help residents in the storm-hit areas, read the statement.
