Human Rights Court Rejects Petition For Berlusconi Comeback

17.04.2014 00:18

The rejection means Italy's former PM Berlusconi loses bid to run for European Parliament elections between May 22 25.

The European Court of Human Rights rejected Wednesday a petition that would enable Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to run in European Parliament elections, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

European Parliament elections slated for May 22-25 was the 77-year-old billionaire tycoon's only hope to go back to politics after he was convicted last August by Italy's Supreme Court of tax fraud at his Mediaset firm.

He was banned from holding public office for two years and was expelled from the Italian Senate.

Lawyer Ana Palacio submitted the petition to the court on behalf of lawmakers from Berlusconi's center-right party Forza Italia and a group of Italian citizens.

Serving on and off as prime minister between 1994 and 2011, Berlusconi had his four-year prison sentence commuted to one year and a court ruled on Tuesday that he would serve his sentence through part-time community service.
