Icc Seeks Probe İnto 2008 Russia-Georgia War

08.10.2015 20:33

Request for investigation into possible war crimes during the 2008 conflict comes from International Criminal Court prosecutor.

The International Criminal Court, or ICC, prosecutors will submit a request for an investigation into possible war crimes committed during the 2008 five-day military conflict between Russia and Georgia.

According to a statement from the court on Thursday, the move came from prosecutor Fatou Bensouda who concluded that there was a "reasonable basis to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of the Court have been committed in Georgia in the context of the armed conflict of August 2008".

Bensouda said she would soon submit a proposal to the court's pre-trial chamber for authorization to open an investigation into the situation in Georgia following the war.

If opened, the investigation will mark the first time Moscow's actions are examined by the court.

A preliminary examination into the situation in Georgia was announced by the court on Aug, 14, 2008.

Unlike Russia, Georgia has been a state party to the ICC since 2003.

In 2008, a five-day war erupted between Russian troops and Tbilisi's forces over the Russian-backed breakaway region of South Ossetia.

It saw hundreds of civilians and soldiers killed and left thousands wounded in Georgia, along with dozens of casualties on the Russian side and hundreds of others from South Ossetia.

Following a France-brokered cease-fire between the two former allies, Russia withdrew its troops from Georgia, as part of the agreement.

Moscow then recognized as independent states the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia. - Ankara
