Ideology And Propaganda Of The Revolution

22.01.2015 11:39

Our “domestic and national” revolution has been in full swing for a while. The Charlie Hebdo massacre on Jan. 7 served as a mirror and exposed the dangerous extremes we have reached mentally, which we may soon reach in practice. The enemies of neo-Salafism defined according to the deadly interaction between an eternal sense of victimization, resentment and revenge consist of the West, Christians, Jews and imperialists. This is the vast Dar al-Harb (territories of war) of Islam's flag carrier and guardian of Muslims all over the world. At the domestic level, the revolution is staged to create a bright future for the masses, supposedly reinvent a different (!) modernity, restore the lost past and take revenge for the last two centuries of reform and modernization. Today, let's try to grasp the ideology and propaganda system of this “divine” cause, where irregularity is simply considered legitimate.

The majority vote the current government received is the unique guarantee for its rule. The goal is to legitimate the tutor's action and discourse, on behalf of Sunnism, which is the faith of that majority. In essence, this is a tautology; a chicken-and-egg story, a logic and approach suggesting that everything the rulers, who enjoy the blessing of the Sunnis, do in the name of the majority is inherently right and undisputable.
The emphasis upon the majority is not only useful to legitimize any action but it has the potential to take the ideology towards fascism. Two examples: Hayrettin Karaman in the Yeni Şafak newspaper wrote in November 2013: “To me, the first thing to do is to establish a democratic order based on Islam in a society where almost 100 percent of the people are Muslim. If liberal democracy is to be preserved, the government should avoid any act that contradicts with this regime, but individuals should voluntarily give up exercising some of their rights for the sake of the majority, of which they are really in need.”
In January 2015, Alev Alatlı spoke to the Cumhuriyet daily, saying: “In one respect, democracy is a regime of sacrifices; you just tolerate the fact that life is not going the way you like it. Those who take to the streets, our citizens who suffer from being born in the wrong neighborhood, which contradicts with the life they idealized… Their unhappiness makes me sad, but I seek comfort in the larger masses that have contempt for the regime.”
The new presidential stronghold, “Ak Saray,” is the center of command and supervision of the ideology and propaganda. The discourse the headquarters generates every day and the inconsiderate messages it delivers to the outer world are pre-planned.
There is a media system behind the production of ideology and its propaganda. Columnists are the cornerstones of the system. This group of people has the duty to legitimate the "New Turkey" ideology and its countless items and gimmicks, ranging from Ottoman Turkish to “natural inequality” between men and women, and to take the messages to the larger segments of society. Apologists are after some sort of a good career in the future; some pursue deputyship, some seek reputation and material gains and some are eager to serve as honorary ideologists of the regime.
State institutions seem to be in harmony with the main command center. The top bureaucracy, which now consists of Justice and Development Party (AKP) cronies, seems to be serving as the implementer and propagandist of the dogma. Key institutions include the Religious Affairs Directorate and the Ministry of Education, which work in the long run as the “production center of New Turks.” In the short run, the fatwas of the Religious Affairs Directorate legitimize the words of the main center. The directorate's endeavors are further confirmed by a number of foundations and think tanks that extensively use social media and TV for propaganda. On the bottom, there is a group of heated trolls who form the lumped proletariat of the system.
The greatest matter of curiosity remains: Why is that ideology Salafism instead of Anatolian Sufism?
