IMF Says Ready To Assist Greece 'İf Requested'

06.07.2015 21:18

International Monetary Fund ready to help crisis hit Greece, says Christine Lagarde.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday said it was ready to help Greece following the referendum rejecting international creditors' bailout terms.

In Sunday's referendum, more than 61 percent of Greek voters backed their government's stance and voted "No" to the measures proposed by its creditors.

"The IMF has taken note of yesterday's referendum held in Greece," Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a statement. "We are monitoring the situation closely and stand ready to assist Greece if requested to do so."

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he would do "whatever is necessary" to protect Britain's economic security, a government spokesman said Monday.

Cameron's comments came during a phone conversation with his German counterpart Angela Merkel when the two leaders assessed the results of the Greek referendum.

Cameron had chaired a meeting early Monday with senior ministers including Chancellor George Osborne and Bank of England governor Mark Carney to review Britain's contingency plans in light of the referendum.

Tsipras will travel to Brussels Tuesday to present new proposals to the Eurogroup, accompanied by his new finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos. - Ankara
