The military junta in Myanmar announced a temporary ceasefire until April 22 following the severe earthquakes that occurred last week.
Search and rescue operations continue for those trapped under the rubble following the earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.4 that occurred in Myanmar on March 28. In a statement from state television, it was announced that a temporary ceasefire has been declared until April 22.
TEMPORARY CEASEFIRE DECLARED
The statement said, "Due to the earthquake and aftershocks, roads, bridges, and buildings have been damaged, many people have lost their lives and been injured. Rescue and relief efforts are being carried out intensively. A temporary ceasefire has been declared from April 2 to April 22, 2025, in order to accelerate aid and reconstruction efforts across the country and to maintain peace and stability."
2,886 PEOPLE HAVE DIED
So far, 2,886 people have lost their lives in the earthquakes, and 4,639 people have been injured. Search and rescue operations initiated for those trapped under the rubble are being supported by various countries, including Turkey.
CIVIL WAR CONTINUES SINCE THE 2021 COUP
The military junta came to power in February 2021 by staging a coup against the civilian government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Since the junta seized power, the Myanmar army has been in conflict with various groups formed to oppose the junta, as well as older ethnic armed groups.
