In New Video, Boko Haram Beheads 2 Suspected 'Spies'

02.03.2015 23:48

By Rafiu Ajakaye.

Nigeria's Boko Haram militant group has released a new video showing the beheading of two men suspected of spying for the military.

The video, codenamed "Harvest of Spies", was posted on Twitter, according to SITE intelligence group which specializes in giving updates about jihadi and supremacist organizations worldwide.

AA could not independently verify the content of the video as Twitter had since suspended the handle - urwatu_wutqa - with which the Boko Haram is known.

According to the intelligence site, the video showed Boko Haram militants directing their victims at knifepoint to confess to spying on residents of the northeastern Baga town at the prompting of Nigerian security officials.

The two victims – identified themselves as Daud Muhammad and Muhammadu Awwalu – were both beheaded by militants.

The first victim said in the video that they had met with security operatives in Michika town in northeastern Adamawa State where they were promised a life of affluence if they infiltrated Boko Haram in Baga.

The video was silent on whether or not the militants still control the town.

Since 2009, Nigeria has battled a fierce Boko Haram insurgency that has ravaged the country's volatile northeast and left thousands dead.

A seemingly emboldened Boko Haram recently stepped up its militant activity, seizing several areas of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, where it has declared a self-styled "Islamic caliphate."
