DECISION ANNOUNCED
A decision was made in the ongoing trial against construction engineer Cüneyt Akkaya and Bekir Baloğlu and his son Osman Baloğlu, who are accused of cutting columns while renovating the building.
During the final hearing held at the Adana 7th High Criminal Court, the defendants made their last defenses. The court panel sentenced the defendants to 13 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "causing the death and injury of multiple people." Concluding that the crime was committed with conscious negligence, the panel increased the sentence to 18 years, then reduced it to 15 years by applying good behavior discount. Additionally, construction engineer Cüneyt Akkaya was given a 2.5-year professional disqualification sentence.
"WE WILL CONTINUE OUR LEGAL STRUGGLE"
After the decision, lawyer Gülsüm Özdoğru made a statement in front of the courthouse, saying, "A 15-year prison sentence was given for Osman Baloğlu, Bekir Baloğlu, and Cüneyt Akkaya. They were all tried for the crime of manslaughter with conscious negligence, and it was decided that they would remain in custody. We did everything we could to ensure that the criminals received their punishment. 15 years is absolutely not a reflection of what they did. This matter is not over here.
They will be tried while in custody, and I will continue to fight in this country until people stop dying in the next earthquakes. None of the defendants showed any remorse. They did not apologize with a single word. From the first hearing, where they were tried as detainees, until the last hearing, they denied what they did. But the court made its decision this way. We will continue our legal struggle until these people receive life sentences multiple times," she stated.
