India, international community trying to restore power, communications to aid Nepal earthquake relief operations.

India on Monday has sent a team of engineers to Nepal to help restore power in the country, following a devastating earthquake two days ago.

"Indian power grid team has reached Kathmandu and will help restore power," India's foreign secretary S Jaishankar said in a media briefing on Monday evening.

Disruptions to the power supply and congested phone networks have posed logistical problems for rescue teams responding to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which has killed almost 4,000 people.

The European Commission has also promised 5 million euros in aid, some of which is to help in restoring telecommunications in the country.

Jaishankar said that India is moving food, medicines, milk, oxygen regenerators and blankets to help the local population.

"For the first time, Indian helicopters dropped commodities in Pokhara today," Jaishankar said.

India's Defence secretary said that the Indian air force is prepared to work through the night to extend the maximum possible help to those trapped in Nepal and to the local population.

He said that while India will continue focusing on providing aid through air support, it will also begin moving aid through road routes, with more than 150 buses headed to Nepal.

India's home secretary said 72 died in India as a result of the earthquake.
