Indonesia Strongly Condemned Illegal Israeli Settlers' Violence Against UN Agency In East Jerusalem

10.05.2024 15:42

'This omission is unacceptable and proves that Israel is responsible for this act of violence,' Foreign Ministry says, urging UN Security Council to take action against Israel.

Indonesia on Friday strongly condemned illegal Israeli settlers' violence against the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem and called on the UN Security Council to take action against Israel.

Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this act of violence against the UNRWA headquarters occurred in front of Israeli police in the occupied territories.

"This omission is unacceptable and proves that Israel is responsible for this act of violence," the ministry said in the statement posted on X.

On Thursday evening, illegal Israeli settlers attempted to set fire to the UNRWA headquarters, with armed men seen outside chanting, "Burn down the United Nations."

"While there were no casualties among our staff, the fire caused extensive damage to the outdoor areas," the UNRWA said in a statement.

Jakarta has condemned the latest incident as "completely unacceptable," saying it harmed UN agency operations that provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.

It set a dangerous precedent for the safety and security of other UN buildings, as well as UN personnel and workers from other humanitarian missions, it added.

"This incident adds to the long list of violence, illegal occupation and various violations of international law and international humanitarian law committed by Israel," it said.

Indonesia called on the Security Council to hold Israel accountable for the crimes and violations of international law that it continues to commit.

"It's time for the Security Council, especially the veto-holding countries to show their leadership & wisdom for the sake of justice, humanity & peace," said the ministry.
