31.10.2014 23:48

During the session of UN Human Rights CounciI, Iran defended its human rights record despite accusations of excessive use of the death penalty and discrimination against women.

Iran's Secretary of High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani on Friday defended its human rights record despite the accusations of excessive use of the death penalty, discrimination against women, the imprisonment of journalists and human rights defenders.

Speaking during the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) working group session to review Iran's human rights record at the UN headquarters in Geneva on Friday, Larijani said Iran had realized significant achievements in recent years with regards to the human rights situation in the country.

During the meeting, concerns were raised about harassment towards members of religious minorities in Iran, and over the excessive use of the death penalty, discrimination against women, as well as the imprisonment of journalists and human rights defenders.

"Capital punishment is a unique particularity of our system. I think it is worth it for Western countries to look into it," said Larijani.
