Iraqi army forces have broken the siege of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group on the Saqlawiyah district of the Anbar province, near the city of Fallujah, a security official said on Sunday.
Fallujah was among the first regions in Iraq to be captured by ISIL in January this year.
The group had reportedly besieged Saqlawiyah on Saturday, with 400 officers and soldiers stranded in the district.
Lieutenant general Rashid Felih, responsible for the operations in al-Anbar, said the district has been "cleared of militants."
"The clashes between ISIL and the army moved to the northern part of Fallujah," he said.
Meanwhile, fifteen ISIL fighters were killed Sunday by the Iraqi army forces in al-Anbar.
The army conducted airstrikes in the city center, destroying four Russian-made heavy machine guns, or Dushka, al-Anbar police chief Ahmad Saddaq ad-Duleymi said.
