21.04.2015 20:48

Israel on Tuesday marked its "Day of Remembrance" to commemorate Israelis killed since the establishment of the self proclaimed Jewish state in 1948.

Israel on Tuesday marked its "Day of Remembrance" to commemorate Israelis killed since the establishment of the self-proclaimed Jewish state in 1948.

Addressing a ceremony marking the occasion, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that no other people had been uprooted from their land and succeeded in coming back as the Jewish people had in Israel.

"As the threats from our enemies to destroy our homeland grow, our determination to defend our homeland grows," he said.

According to the Defense Ministry, a total of 23,320 Israelis have been killed in various wars and attacks since the creation of Israel in 1948.

More than 1.5 million Israelis are expected to visit cemeteries throughout the country on Tuesday and Wednesday to mark Remembrance Day.
