Israel 'Repeatedly Stalling' At Cairo Ceasefire Talks

19.08.2014 15:49

Palestinian resistance faction Hamas on Tuesday reiterated charges that Israel was "repeatedly stalling" at talks in Cairo aimed at reaching a lasting ceasefire following Israel's weeks long military onslaught on the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Palestinian resistance faction Hamas on Tuesday reiterated charges that Israel was "repeatedly stalling" at talks in Cairo aimed at reaching a lasting ceasefire following Israel's weeks-long military onslaught on the blockaded Gaza Strip.

"Israel lacks the will to reach an agreement," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement.

Abu Zuhri called on Israel to "stop playing the waiting game" and seize the opportunity to produce a permanent ceasefire with Palestinian factions in the embattled coastal strip.

He went on to assert that Hamas was prepared "to deal with all contingencies and developments."

Israeli officials, for their part, could not be immediately reached for comment.

On Monday evening, Palestinian and Israeli negotiators agreed to extend a five-day truce by 24 hours to allow both parties to continue holding indirect talks in the Egyptian capital.

The talks follow more than a month of devastating Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip, which have left more than 2000 Palestinians dead – the vast majority of them civilians – and more than 10,000 injured.

Launched in early July, Israel's "Operation Protective Edge" is the deadliest of three Israeli military offensives to target the strip within the past six years.

Palestinian casualties from the current offensive alone have surpassed the combined Palestinian death toll from two previous operations, including Israel's highly-destructive "Operation Cast Lead" in 2008/9 in which some 1500 Palestinians were killed over the course of three weeks.

According to Israeli figures, at least 64 Israeli soldiers have been killed in recent battles with Palestinian fighters in Gaza – the highest military death toll for Israel of any of its three onslaughts on the territory.

Three Israeli civilians, meanwhile, have been killed by rocket fire from Gaza.

Since 2007, the Gaza Strip – home to some 1.8 million Palestinians – has reeled under a crippling Israeli blockade that has badly affected the local economy and played havoc with residents' livelihoods.
