This year's 14th İstanbul Biennial attracted a total of 545,000 visitors to its contemporary art exhibitions across the city before wrapping up its last show, a selection that enjoyed an extended run at the İstanbul Modern until Thursday due to popular demand, organizers announced on Friday.
The number marks the highest ever admission to the biennial, organized by the İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV).
The 10th edition of the international contemporary art show in 2007 drew 91,000 visitors, while the 2009 biennial was seen by 101,000 people. The 2011 show attracted 110,000 art lovers and the previous edition, 2013's 13th İstanbul Biennial, was seen by 337,429 visitors.
Curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev under the conceptual framework “Saltwater: A Theory of Thought Forms,” the 14th biennial opened on Sept. 5 and presented more than 1,500 works of art by over 80 participants in 36 venues across the city's European and Asian sides as well as on the Princes' Islands over a period of 12 weeks.
Around 500 international journalists attended the biennial's preview as accredited press members and extensive coverage of the art show appeared in numerous media outlets around the world, including The New York Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Der Tagesspiegel, Le Monde, La Repubblica, in the form of news articles and reviews, according to the İKSV.
