This year's Akbank Jazz Festival will kick off in İstanbul on Thursday, featuring performances by the stars of the world jazz scene, including multiple Grammy Award-winning American double bassist Christian McBride, British jazz-pop singer Jamie Cullum and Australian electronica musician Chet Faker.

Set to continue until Nov. 2, the 24th edition of the festival will offer more than 40 concerts by nearly 300 musicians in different venues across İstanbul.

McBride will take to the stage with his trio on Friday at the Cemal Reşit Rey (CRR) Concert Hall as part of his ongoing tour to promote his latest album, “Out Here,” and Faker -- whose stage name is a tribute to American jazz trumpeter Chet Baker -- will perform Nov. 1 at the Babylon club for his world tour in support of his 2014 debut studio album “Built on Glass.” Cullum will delight the festival audience at the Zorlu Center Performing Arts Center (PSM) on Oct. 30.

The other festival performers include China Moses, the daughter of Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Beirut-born, France-based trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf as well as American jazz pianist Kenny Barron and English double bassist Dave Holland. Barron, Holland and McBride make up the festival's “Masters of Jazz” section.

Turkish ney (reed flute) player Kudsi Erguner, German jazz pianist Michael Wollny and Turkish percussion master Hamdi Akatay will perform together on Saturday at the CRR as part of the festival's “Special Projects” section.

The late Mehmet Uluğ, who was the director of the festival since its launch in 1990 until his death in 2013, will be remembered in a tribute event on Oct. 28 at Babylon, hosted by jazz saxophonist İlhan Erşahin.
