The European Commission has held its fifth journalism workshop in Brussels on organ donation and transplantation.
Hélène Le Borgne, Policy Officer for Organ Donation and Transplantation, said media could play an important role in increasing organ donations.
A total of over 63,000 patients were officially placed on organs' waiting lists on 31 December 2013 in the European Union, according to its executive body, the European Commission.
If patients from Iceland, Norway and Turkey are added, 86,000 patients are on the waiting lists, the Commission says.
About 50,000 patients in the EU are on a waiting list for kidney donations while 6,700 people on a liver waiting list, and 3,450 on a heart waiting list.
Journalists from different news organizations from across the world attended Wednesday's workshop in the Belgian capital.
