A number of journalists will demand the release of outspoken journalist Mehmet Baransu, who was imprisoned in March for publishing documents concerning a military coup plot dating to 2003, with 24-hour protests broadcast live on the Internet.

Members of the "Platform to free Baransu," which includes some of Baransu's family, friends and colleagues, will on Friday start their protest against his arrest, maltreatment and prison conditions. Such a protest is thought to be the first in Turkey. The protest will be titled "Make some noise before it's your turn."

Baransu recently called on journalists, politicians and the public to take a stance against pressure on the media, no matter the source.

Baransu has been in prison since March 1 of this year, when around 30 police officers raided and searched his home in İstanbul's Eyüp district for 12 hours before detaining him for questioning in relation to documents he submitted to prosecutors in 2010 about the Balyoz coup plot. On March 2, Baransu was arrested by the İstanbul 5th Penal Court of Peace.

One of the charges leveled against Baransu by İstanbul Public Prosecutor Gökalp Kökçü, who is leading the investigation, is of forming an illegal and armed organization to commit a crime, in line with Article 220 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).

Another charge against Baransu invoked Article 327 of the TCK, which stipulates three to eight years in prison for people who are found guilty of unauthorized access to information compromising state security. He was also charged under Article 326 of the TCK, which mandates eight to 12 years in jail for anyone who steals, destroys, damages or uses confidential documents in an unauthorized place. An additional charge, based on Article 329 of the TCK, mandates five to 10 years in jail for those who disclose documents relating to the security and political interests of the state. Baransu is accused of revealing state secrets through his coverage of the Uludere incident, in which 34 Kurdish villagers were killed by F-16 fighter jets in 2011.

Meanwhile, journalist Ali Özsoy is to appear before a court on Tuesday on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan via the content of his book "Hırsız Vaaar!" (There is a Thief!). The book is about the biggest corruption and bribery scandal in the history of the Turkish Republic, which came to public attention on Dec. 17, 2013.
