Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ announced on Wednesday that there are 16 militants from the terrorist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently being held in a Turkish prison.
Responding to questions from lawmakers in the parliamentary Planning and Budget Commission, Bozdağ said three ISIL militants who killed one police officer, one soldier and one citizen in the Ulukışla district of Niğde in March were put in an Ankara prison and are being tried.
However, he did not provide the nationality of the ISIL members, saying the note was handed to him during deliberations during a meeting of the commission.
The justice minister also revealed that 2,760 foreigners are currently being held in Turkish prisons, either as convicts serving jail time or as detainees being held in pre-trial detention. Bozdağ added that 700 of the foreigners are of Syrian origin. (Cihan/Today's Zaman)
