Koreas Exchange Fire At Border Second Time This Month

19.10.2014 15:33

South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff says guards fired warning shots as North Korean soldiers neared military demarcation line.

South and North Korea exchanged fire Sunday at their heavily guarded border, but no casualties have been reported in the second such incident this month.

According to the South's national news agency Yonhap, the South's border guards fired warning shots at around 17.40 local time (11.40 Turkish time) as North Korean soldiers neared the military demarcation line in the South Korean border city of Paju.

It cited South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff in reporting that North Korea fired back, hitting a South Korean guard post twice, and South Korea then returned fire.

North and South Korea last exchanged fire October 10 after civic activists in the South flew anti-Pyongyang leaflets to the North over land in air balloons.

Earlier this month, Pyongyang had sent its effective second-in-command, Hwang Pyong-so, to the South for unanticipated talks with leading Seoul officials.

The two sides remain technically at war as they never signed a peace treaty at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Last week, the two Koreas held secretive military talks at their closely guarded border village of Panmunjom with the reported aim of relieving recent heightened tensions, Yonhap "ed a military source as saying.
