Kuwait Reports New Swine Flu Death

Kuwaiti health authorities on Saturday reported a new swine flu fatality, the ninth since the virus first appeared in Kuwait in 2009.



A Kuwaiti woman died Friday morning in Adan public hospital after succumbing to complications from the swine flu virus, hospital director Bader al-Otaibi was "ed by Kuwait's official news agency as saying on Saturday.



The woman was pregnant with twins and a Caesarean section was performed to deliver them, al-Otaibi said, adding that the newborns were in good health and that they had not contracted the disease.



Sources at Kuwait's Health Ministry, meanwhile, said that Friday's fatality brings total swine flu deaths in Kuwait to nine since 2009.



They said the victims included four Kuwaiti nationals and five foreign residents.



Friday's case was the first Kuwaiti national to die of the virus in 2015. Last month, an Indian resident died of swine flu as well.



Designated a "pandemic" by the World Health Organization in 2009, swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by influenza.



The virus was first observed in Mexico in 2009.
