Libya Denies Jordan Army On Soil To Free Diplomat

20.04.2014 12:18

No Jordanian troops have entered Libyan territory to help free the kingdom's ambassador in Tripoli kidnapped a few days earlier, the Libyan government asserted on Sunday.

No Jordanian troops have entered Libyan territory to help free the kingdom's ambassador in Tripoli kidnapped a few days earlier, the Libyan government asserted on Sunday.

"There are still some difficulties in resolving the crisis but communication channels have been established with the kidnappers," Libyan cabinet spokesman Ahmed Lamin told Anadolu Agency, amid concurrent rumors that the diplomat has been released.

On Tuesday, ambassador Fawaz al-Aitan, along with two companions, was abducted by unidentified gunmen in Libyan capital Tripoli.

U.S.-based Arab Daily News website reported that Jordanian special forces, with U.S. intelligence assistance, have deployed troops in Libya by helicopters as part of an operation to free the diplomat.

The Jordanian government had condemned the kidnapping and asserted that communication is underway with its Libyan counterpart to secure the diplomat's release.

The kidnapping is the latest in a string of attacks targeting foreign diplomats in Libya, which has been suffering political and security instability since the overthrow of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
