Libya Pm Makes Unannounced Algiers Visit

Abdullah al-Thinni, who heads Libya's Tobruk-based government, arrived in Algiers on Tuesday for an announced visit, Algeria's official news agency has reported.



Al-Thinni was received at the airport by his Libyan counterpart, Abdelmalek Sellal, according to the news agency.



The two men reportedly sat down for talks shortly after al-Thinni's arrival.



The Libyan premier will reportedly stay in Algiers for two days, during which he will hold talks with Algerian officials.



In recent months, Algeria has hosted two rounds of UN-sponsored peace talks between Libya's warring factions.



Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.



Since then, the country's stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government, each with its own institutions and military capacities.



Vying for legislative authority are the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the Islamist-led General National Congress, which convenes in capital Tripoli.



The two assemblies support two rival governments respectively headquartered in the two cities.
