Local Tribe Fights Isıl Militants İn Iraq

30.07.2014 00:18

Clashes between ISIL and fighters from local al Bu Farraj tribe leave three militants dead in Saladin province.

At least three militants have been killed in clashes between Sunni Islamist militants and tribal fighters in the central Iraqi province of Saladin, local sources said.

Violent clashes erupted on Tuesday between militants linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and members of the local al-Bu Farraj tribe after ISIL attacked the town of al-Dhuluiya, the tribe's chief Rabeh al-Farraji told Anadolu Agency.

Five other people including three ISIL militants were injured during the clashes, he added.

The violence in Iraq has escalated since early June after a coalition of armed insurgent groups led by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, or ISIL, seized several key cities and towns in the province including Tikrit and Baiji.

In the city of Samarra, ISIL-led militants blew up a strategic bridge over the river Tigris on Tuesday, according to security sources.

The bridge connected Mosul to Baghdad through Samarra, Hussein al-Hafaji from Saladin police department told AA.

Elsewhere in Iraq, one civilian has been reported killed during army operations to force ISIL militants out of their stronghold city of Falluja in Anbar province.

The assault on Tuesday also left 17 people including women and children wounded, Wisam al-Isawi from Falluja state hospital said.
