Mexico Has 22,732 Homicides İn 2013

23.07.2014 22:48

Although the homicide rate declined, some states show that violence is still very high, says security expert.

In 2013, Mexico registered a total of 22,732 homicides, the vast majority of whom were male, according to data published Wednesday by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics.

The figures from 2011 with 27,000 have seen a significant decrease in 2013. But overall, over six years since 2007, Mexico has seen a 156 percent increase with homicide figures registered in 2007 at 8,867 and in 2013, it escalated to 22,732.

"Although the homicide rate declined, we see there are still some states which show signs that violence in those places is still very high," said Jose Ortega Sanchez, president of the Citizen Council for Public Security in Mexico City.

The State of Mexico is the most violent at least since 2007, in which 3,280 homicides took place in 2013 alone and 15,598 from 2007 to 2013, according to the institution.

"The State of Mexico is having an increase in kidnappings, killings and extortion. Authorities are unable to restore order and punish crime. The governments, local and federal, have failed to provide security for their habitants," Sanchez said.

Guerrero, a southern state, and Chihuahua, a northern state, take second and third place in homicides, in which there were 2,203 and 2,141 murders respectively.

Guerrero who has suffered much criminal gang violence for several years, and has seen a decrease since 2010.

In 2013, 19,981 men and 2,61 women were killed. Death by shooting is the most common among those killed with 63 percent of men were murdered by guns, and 42 percent of women.

"Many victims are people who have nothing to do with the crime, and are blackmailed, kidnapped and/or killed in the end," Sanchez said.

Sanchez, however, claimed the data is hiding the figures for the much troubled Tamaulipas area where there is a rate of 26 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

"Tamaulipas today is hell and is captured by organized crime," he added.

According to the document, the main causes of death apart from shooting, are aggression with white arms (non-firearms such as knives, swords and daggers) which resulted in the murder of  2,598 men and 504 women. Choking, strangulation and suffocation, also are responsible for the deaths of 1,131 men and 397 women.
