Mexico İs New Leader İn Latin American Vehicle Production

05.03.2015 01:33

Latin American country now produces more vehicles than Brazil.

Mexico is now the leading vehicle manufacturer in Latin America, the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers said Wednesday.

The Latin American giant now produces more vehicles than Brazil and ranks seventh globally. Mexico produced 3.3 million vehicles in 2014, a more than 10 percent increase above 2013 figures.

For its parts, Brazil produced of 3.1 million cars in 2014, or about 15 percent less than the previous.

The expansion of Mexican car construction has permitted members of the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, to increase their combined global market share from 14 percent in 2009 to 19 percent in 2014, according to Yong-Geun Kim, president of the OICA, who spoke at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Mexican Automobile Industry Association, or AMIA, said January saw record numbers in the production, exports and domestic sales of Mexican-made vehicles, and added that the production of cars and light trucks rose by 6.8 percent compared to the same month a year ago.

AMIA expects production to increase to about 3.5 millions vehicles in 2015.

The association also believes export will grow to 2.9 million vehicles in 2015, which would be a record in car production for the country.

According to the AMIA, 70 percent of the cars and light trucks produced are destined for the American market.
