The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has decided not to attend a reception that will be held at the new presidential palace to mark Republic Day on Oct. 29, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli said on Tuesday.
Following a MHP parliamentary group meeting, Bahçeli, in response to a question from a reporter on whether his party will join the reception, said: “We will be at Anıtkabir [the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk]. We won't be attending the reception.”
The Republic Day reception is scheduled to take place at the new presidential palace, which came under the spotlight when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that he will move Turkey's first-ever presidential office in Çankaya to the new building on Republic Day. The new presidential palace has drawn criticism as it was constructed inside Atatürk Forestry Farm (AOÇ) on an area of 300,000 square meters.
Although a court earlier issued an injunction on the complex's construction on the grounds that it is in a protected zone, President Erdoğan challenged the court ruling, saying: “Let them demolish it if they have enough power to do so. They ordered an injunction, but they will not be able to stop it. I will open it and I will sit in it.”
