Migrant Stabbed Amid Greece Refugee Camp Violence

30.09.2016 14:03

A migrant was stabbed in the back late Thursday at a refugee camp in northern Greece, following a series of violence at various camps across the country, local media reported Friday.

The stabbed migrant was immediately transported to a hospital in Thessaloniki following the fight at the Fessa camp in Oreokastro while some others suffered minor injuries, Greek newspaper Proto Thema said.

Fessa accommodates more than 1,200 migrants, according to official government figures.

The reason that triggered the clash, which follows a series of violence at refugee camps across Greece, with migrants being stranded at the camps for months, remains unknown.

Earlier this week, four minors staying at the Moria camp in Lesvos were arrested for allegedly raping another minor at the camp, Greek daily Kathimerini reported.

Ten days ago, clashes between migrants and refugees resulted in a fire that destroyed part of the Moria camp. A few days earlier, migrants had clashed with far-right Greek protesters in Chios, while the latter were demonstrating against the large number of refugees on the island.

In an attempt to resolve the problem, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, will meet with the Mayor of Lesvos, Spyros Galinos and other officials in Athens on Monday, according to the Greek state agency AMNA. -
