Minister Accuses Opposition Of Blocking Pro-Miner Amendment In Bill

22.09.2014 18:52

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız alleged on Monday that an opposition party deputy had blocked an additional amendment in the recent omnibus bill that would have supported workers in the mining industry. Yıldız claimed the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry had predicted potential.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız alleged on Monday that an opposition party deputy had blocked an additional amendment in the recent omnibus bill that would have supported workers in the mining industry.

Yıldız claimed the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry had predicted potential burdens on miners as a result of other amendments in the bill.

Responding to a question from a journalist about mine workers who have been discharged from their sites recently amid increasing operating costs as a result of the omnibus bill, the energy minister said the ministry had foreseen the problem and had tried to take measures to mitigate it.

Yıldız stated that the ministry had submitted an additional motion in the parliamentary Planning and Budget Commission in order to prevent mine employers from laying off workers, adding that the motion was approved in the commission; however, he claimed the motion was withdrawn from consideration based on an opposition deputy's objection during the plenary session.

Underlining that the motion is ready to be resubmitted any time, Yıldız said it can be brought to the plenary session in the form of bill when Parliament reopens. The Parliament will start a new legislative year on Oct. 1.

An omnibus bill passed in Parliament early this month has caused more than 36 mine owners to close down their sites across Turkey. Additionally, workers at the sites have lost their jobs due to amendments in the bill regulating work hours and wages and consequently increasing production costs,

The Türk Enerji-Sen miners' union has said the number of closed sites may increase. Union head Mehmet Özer, commenting on the amendments, claimed 100 more sites will shut down operations, leaving nearly 10,000 workers jobless in the near future. Like other critics, Özer lamented the lack of consideration of the impacts the amendments would have on employers as well as workers.
