More Than 8,100 Facing Trial Over Turkey Coup Plot

27.07.2016 19:19

More than 8,100 suspects have been charged and are being held in custody in relation to Turkey's July 15 coup attempt, Interior Minister Efkan Ala said Wednesday.

Speaking on broadcaster A Haber, he said the majority of the 8,113 in custody facing trial were military personnel. "5,266 of them are soldiers, including 151 generals, 1,656 officers and others."

He said 1,684 judges and prosecutors and 1,019 police officers had also been remanded in custody.

Ala said 15,846 people have been arrested as part of the investigation into the supporters of Fetullah Gulen said to be behind the attempted overthrow of Turkey's government by a section of the military.

This figure included 10,012 members, including 178 generals and 2,728 officers. He said 2,901 police officers and 2,167 judges and prosecutors were among those arrested.

The coup attempt, which martyred at least 246 people, has been blamed on the Fetullah Terrorist Organization. -
