Nasrallah Links 'Aggression' On Yemen To Saudi 'Failures'

27.03.2015 23:03

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday attributed recent "aggression" against Yemen to "failures" on the part of Saudi Arabia, challenging recent allegations of Iranian "hegemony" over Yemen.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday attributed recent "aggression" against Yemen to "failures" on the part of Saudi Arabia, challenging recent allegations of Iranian "hegemony" over Yemen.

"The House of Saud's failures in Yemen and its loss of control over the country is the real reason for their aggression against Yemen," Nasrallah said in a televised speech.

"The aggression is a Saudi attempt to recover Yemen and its hegemony over it," Nasrallah said.

Nasrallah went on to accuse Saudi Arabia of "constantly fueling the fire in Syria and impeding any attempt to find a political solution there," holding the oil-rich Gulf kingdom responsible for "suicide bombings in Iraq and [militant group] Daesh."

"The minds of the lazy and failing Saudi leaders have opened the way for Iran," Nasrallah asserted without elaborating.

He also said claims of "Iranian hegemony" over Yemen were "the biggest of lies."

"Any Muslim who accepts this aggression against Yemen is a sinner who will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment," the Hezbollah leader declared.

He called for halting a Saudi-led military campaign against Yemen's Houthi movement and for finding a political solution to the crisis, stressing that the "window of opportunity [for a political solution] is still open for the Saudi rulers."

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies began a military campaign, including airstrikes, against Houthi positions and forces loyal to Yemen's ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Riyadh said the strikes were in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi to "save the people [of Yemen] from the Houthi militias."

Fractious Yemen has been beset by turmoil since last September, when Shiite militants overran capital Sanaa, from which they have sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country as well.

Some Gulf countries accuse Shiite Iran of supporting Yemen's Houthi insurgency.
