Nigeria: Bodies Recovered İn Former Boko Haram-Held Town

26.11.2015 21:18

Remains of at least 35 people found in Bama town, a former Boko Haram stronghold.

Remains of at least 35 people have been recovered in Nigeria's Bama town four months after it was liberated from Boko Haram militants, an Nigerian official said.

Bama -- the second largest city in Nigeria's northeast Borno State some 87 kilometres from capital Maiduguri and the epicentre of Boko Haram insurgency -- was freed from militants by the military in April nearly seven months after the militants seized the town and held several civilians hostage.

Local government chairman, Alhaji Ali Gujja, who led a team of rehabilitation workers and sanitation personnel in the town, said Thursday decomposed bodies of at least 35 people were found in several houses destroyed by Boko Haram.

"We've recovered more than 35  decomposed bodies in Bama in the course of our clearing exercise. Government has given a matching order for us to clean the ruins of the town so that rehabilitation and reconstruction can start in earnest," the official said.

Nearly 30,000 people were displaced in the city, according to a recent data by the state emergency management agency. Many of the displaced people are taking refuge at two Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in capital Maiduguri, Mohammed Kanar, head of the National Emergency Management Agency in the state, has said. - Nijerya
