Nigerian gunmen have freed a German citizen whom they kidnapped almost a week ago, according to the construction company the man works for. Another German employee was killed in last week's raid.

A German national working for construction firm Julius Berger who was kidnapped last week by Nigerian gunmen has been released, the company said on Thursday.

"Julius Berger Nigeria...is pleased to officially announce the release of the company's member of staff," a statement said.

"The company would like to thank all those who assisted in achieving a swift and safe release, especially government authorities and security services," it added.

The gunmen attacked the man and a fellow German co-worker who were on their way to work in a quarry near the town of Sagamu in the southwestern state of Ogun on October 24. The co-worker was shot dead in the attack.

At the time, the company said the two workers were traveling without their security escorts.

Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer and biggest economy, has one of the world's worst records for kidnapping, particularly in the south of the country. Most victims are Nigerians, but foreigners are also frequently the target.
