Nine people have been arrested in a counterterrorism operation against the Marxist Leninist Communist Party terrorist group in the province of Izmir in the west of Turkey, public prosecutors have said.
Pinar Turk, who was the mayoral candidate of the People's Democratic Party for Izmir municipality in the country's March 30 municipal elections, and Kerim Altinmakas, from the Socialist Party of the Oppressed, were among those detained in a police raid on several addresses in the city, officials from the Izmir Public Prosecution office said on Friday.
The detained are alleged to be members of the MLKP group, which formed from two communist factions in 1994 and is considered to be among the 12 most active terrorist organizations in Turkey since 2007, according to Turkish security officials.
Two more people are being sought as part of the operation.
