Briefing journalists on the situation in Syria, the United Nations (UN) humanitarian adviser said “nothing is more important now than to get an end to the fighting.”
Speaking about the bombing of a hospital in Aleppo last week, the special advisor for the UN Special Envoy for Syria Jan Egeland told reporters it was “a catastrophe that medical relief has been targeted, that doctors and nurses are killed while the population is bleeding.”
Egeland also said “besiegement is worse in Syria, is worse in Syria, than in any other place on Earth” adding that “it has been going on now for years and we are now in danger of creating new besieged areas. We cannot allow that to happen.”
The special advisor commended efforts of the co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), Russia and the United States, but he also said “we don't need declarations, we need an end to bombardment and end to fighting.”
