WASHINGTON, D.C. (AA) The U.S. contravened its own values and tortured detainees following the deadly attacks on Washington and New York over a decade ago, American President Barack Obama acknowledged Friday.
"We tortured some folks," Obama said while speaking to reporters at the White House. "We did some things that were contrary to our values.
"Even before I came into office I was very clear that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 we did some things that were wrong," he added.
Obama said that the torture of detainees was a factor of pressures to avoid another potentially deadly attack on American civilians.
"And it is important for us not to feel too sanctimonious in retrospect about the tough job that those folks had," he said.
His comments come as the U.S. Senate prepares to release a report that criticizes the CIA's interrogation and detention practices after 9/11.
