President Barack Obama said Tuesday that Turkey has a right to defend itself after Turkish jets shot down a Russian aircraft.
"Turkey, like every country, has a right to defend its territory and its airspace," Obama said, noting that he would soon talk to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"It's very important for us to make sure that Russians and Turks are talking to each other to find out exactly what happened and take measures to discourage any kind of escalation," he added.
Obama's comments came during a press conference at the White House the French President Francois Hollande.
The shooting down of the Russian plane "points to an ongoing problem with Russian operations in the sense that they are operating very close to the Turkish border and they are going after moderate opposition that are supported by not only Turkey and by a wide range of countries," said Obama. - Washington DC
