Obama Hosts Saudi King Amid Regional İnstability

04.09.2015 21:33

Crises in Yemen, Syria, and recently brokered Iran nuclear pact to dominate agenda.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud met with President Barack Obama on Friday at the White House as the longtime allies seek to navigate regional turmoil.

The visit is Salman's first since ascending to the throne earlier this year following the death of former King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

"The fact that he has chosen to take this first visit to the United States is indicative of the longstanding friendship between the United States and Saudi Arabia," Obama said in brief remarks before meeting with Salman.

The president said he and Salman will discuss the ongoing crises in Yemen and Syria -- where the allies share concerns; the fight against Daesh; and the Iran pact brokered between Tehran and world powers.

The leaders will also discuss the global economy and energy during their Oval Office meeting, he added.

"Our relationship is beneficial not only to our two countries but to the entire world and to our region," Salman said. "We always emphasize that we want to deepen our relations and further our cooperation in all fields."

Obama and Salman will hold a working lunch following their bilateral talks. Vice President Joe Biden is expected to attend. - Washington DC
