On This Column

One of the main purposes of this column is to give expats living in Turkey an idea of new regulations and laws related to expat life. The news in the Official Gazette, however, is not likely to be of interest to expats nowadays. There is certainly some legal news such as a new high court decision which ruled that speed limits as determined by radars should be made in such a way by setting up a trap for drivers -- I will write about this in the coming days -- but all this news is getting lost in between the vital news for Turks. If I place the key words on Turkey’s agenda on a list, there is no possibility of a smile appearing on the face of the average Turkish citizen. I read economics, politics and other news and am bewildered by how some people are optimistic though I am more than pleased to see their presumptions become true at the end of the day.Well, there is no good news or regulations which can be considered as a good topic to write about in this column nowadays. I read economics, politics and other news and am bewildered by how some people are optimistic though I am more than pleased to see their presumptions become true at the end of the day.
Well, there is no good news or regulations which can be considered as a good topic to write about in this column nowadays. Things are on the edge and God forbid worse things may start happening. I don’t know how expats feel about this but many locals are very concerned about the future.
I must note that it is very difficult to focus on writing a topic not related to the current agenda of Turkey. Everything going on around the world and in Turkey is messy. It is messy to the extent that you would think that things cannot become any worse than they already are until you hear the news the next day and see how it became worse. I don’t know how you feel reading a legal corner talking about residency permits while all this is happening and the country going through tough times. I rely on the fact that the information in this column is for those expatriates or visitors to Turkey who are searching for legal basic information and will probably be helpful after these traumatic moments have passed without any further loss. I slightly envy those relaxed Britons reading English news about how the pregnancy of the Duchess of Cambridge is progressing and how the members of the royal family were immensely thrilled about it. I hope these form of concerns will be in the headlines of Turkish news one day with nothing worse than what is currently going on in this beautiful country…
In the coming days I am planning to write about some new articles concerning residency permits and work permits as well as some property law-related articles concerning the new consumer law. These topics were all covered earlier a few times but they all deserve an update. I have been receiving some questions about the registration of cell phones in Turkey but unfortunately I am not planning to write more on this as the regulations vary for each officer and the matter is becoming a repetition of previous articles. One of the other topics I will be trying to shed some light on will be tax matters and a new law which enables companies to rectify their bookkeeping.
As usual I welcome all your comments and questions and I may try to respond in person if the matter is not suitable to be covered in this corner.
