A female worker died and scores of others allegedly fell sick after drinking water at their garment factory in Gazipur on the outskirts of Dhaka Saturday morning.
A police officer told Xinhua over the phone from Gazipur "We've come to know that a female worker died and some 100 workers were treated at various hospitals after the incident."
"The workers of Masstrade International Garments were sickened at their factory after drinking water," he said.
Quoting health officials, the police who preferred to be unnamed said most of the workers suffered from vomiting tendency while some of them complained of upset stomach.
He said the cause of the incident was not known immediately and steps have already been taken to investigate it.
Almost all the sickened workers are out of danger and many have left hospitals, he said, adding, "We have collected water samples and sent them for laboratory test to know the causes of the contamination."
Tahmina Begum, a spokeswoman of the factory, however, told journalists that the worker did not die from drinking water.
"May be she has died due to her any other illness," Begum claimed.
The police officer said, "The exact cause of the worker's death will be known after autopsy."
Some 300 workers of a garment factory in Gazipur were hospitalized as they fell sick after drinking contaminated water in June last year. (Cihan/Xinhua)
