The Palestinian Authority (PA) on Friday welcomed a non-binding vote by Italy's parliament to recognize a Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders.
"This courageous decision by Italy's parliament will help the peace process and the internationally-backed two-state solution," the Ramallah-based PA said in a statement.
The PA also expressed hope that the Italian government would call on parliament to fully recognize the state of Palestine, stressing "the Palestinian side's commitment to achieving a lasting peace."
Earlier Friday, a majority of Italian lawmakers approved two resolutions calling for the recognition of an independent Palestinian state and calling on Rome to support direct Palestine-Israel talks.
Last October, Sweden officially recognized the State of Palestine, becoming the first European Union state to do so.
Sweden's move set in motion a series of similar resolutions adopted by the parliaments of Britain, France, Spain and Ireland.
