Pakistan Arrests 46 Indian Fishermen

06.03.2015 20:34

The arrests have been made days after resumption of talks between the two nuclear rivals.

Pakistan arrested 46 Indian fishermen Friday for allegedly violating its territorial waters in the Arabian Sea, Pakistani maritime officials said.

The arrests have been made days after resumption of talks between the two nuclear rivals in the backdrop of Indian foreign secretary's visit to the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

The maritime border in the Arabian Sea is poorly defined and often results in the arrest of fishermen from both sides as most boats lack sophisticated navigational technology to define their exact location in the sea.

According to Pakistan's Foreign Office, some 382 Pakistani and 396 Indian prisoners, mostly fishermen were currently languishing in both countries' jails.

Strained diplomatic ties between the two South Asian neighbors also add to the fishermen's miseries as many of them remain behind bars even after completion of their sentence.
