Pakistan Ruling Party Gains İn Parliament Upper House

06.03.2015 09:18

– Pakistan's ruling party makes gains in parliament's upper house likely help in passing legislation.

Pakistan's ruling party has made significant gains in elections for the parliamentary upper house, the Senate, according to results from Pakistan's election commission released Thursday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistani Muslim League gained 10 more seats in the 108-member Senate, raising its total strength to 26.

The opposition Pakistani People's Party remains the largest single party, with 27 seats, but the result will make it easier for Sharif's party to pass legislation, with the help of its allies.

The Senate, which is elected by members of the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies, has 22 seats for each province, another six seats for the semi-autonomous northwestern tribal region and 4 seats for capital Islamabad.

Any legislation passed by the National Assembly must be ratified by the Senate.
