Pakistan has established two committees of senior police to investigate attempts to sabotage the $51.5 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), police said Thursday.
The announcement came the day after police in the far northeastern region of Gilgit-Baltistan said they had arrested 12 suspects belonging to the Balawaristan National Front (BNF). Police said the group was funded by India's Research and Analysis Wing intelligence agency and aimed to disrupt the CPEC.
"Two special committees comprising senior police officials have been constituted to further dig out the matter and identify other members of the network," Gilgit-Baltistan police spokesman Ghulam Mohammad told Anadolu Agency.
Police said 60 suspected BNF supporters had been identified.
Mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan, which borders China, is the starting point of the CPEC in Pakistan. The project includes a network of road, rail and pipeline projects that is part of China's plan to extend its global economic influence through Pakistan's Arabian Sea ports. -
