Palestinian Bill Means Hamas Rule İn W. Bank: Israel Pm

18.12.2014 20:12

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday warned that a proposed resolution lodged with the UN Security Council – calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state – would lead to the takeover of the West Bank by Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday warned that a proposed resolution lodged with the UN Security Council – calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state – would lead to the takeover of the West Bank by Hamas.

Netanyahu's warning came during a ceremony marking the third day of the Jewish Hanukkah holiday and one day after Jordan submitted the proposed Security Council resolution on behalf of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

"Abu Mazen [Abbas] thinks he can threaten us with unilateral steps. He does not understand that they will result in a Hamas takeover in Judea and Samaria [i.e. the West Bank], as previously occurred in Gaza," Netanyahu said at the ceremony.

"We will not allow this to happen. We will never agree to unilateral diktat. We will always safeguard our security," he added.

On Wednesday night, Jordan formally submitted the Palestinian draft resolution to the Security Council. The proposed resolution calls for Israel to withdraw – by the end of 2017 – from all Palestinian land seized in 1967.

The draft resolution further calls for "a just, lasting, comprehensive and peaceful solution [to the conflict], to bring an end to the Israeli occupation."

It also calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Hamas wrested control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 after routing forces loyal to Abbas' Fatah movement, prompting Israel to impose a draconian blockade – which remains in force until today – on the coastal enclave.
